How does it work?

For the Summer and Winter league competitions, each runner has a base 10k time, based on their fastest 10k from the previous season, or a season before if a recent one isn't available. Their base 10k time is this fastest 10k time plus 5%. The aim is to set a 'level-playing' field before the start of the season. This can be difficult if a runner does not have a previous 10k time to base their handicap scores on, as this time needs to be estimated, but a best guess is made.

The only difference with the EYCCL handicap is that a runner's base time is their fastest 10k plus 35%, to ensure they score points over the normally muddy and undulating cross-country surfaces!

Each runner then scores points from races if times are achieved faster than their base time, adjusted for different distances. There are points available also according to the distance - long distances get more.

At the AGM, 'prestigious' awards are given out for the top 3 male and female from each of the 3 handicap competitions.
